Is your business compliant with TPS?
What is TPS?
TPS is the telephone preference service. It covers both the consumer and corporate worlds in allowing an individual or business to opt-out of unsolicited marketing/sales calls. It is a legal requirement that businesses who make marketing/cold calls check the TPS registry before calling and if registered don’t call that person or business.
Is my business compliant?
Legally you need to check the TPS database if your making these types of calls, so if you don’t currently check the database or have a service that checks for you and you are making unsolicited calls then you are not compliant.
What is the impact if I’m not compliant?
If an individual or business complains they have received a call from you to the TPS service, your details will be sent on to the ICO (information commissioners office) for breach of your legal requirements. They are responsible for enforcement and will fine businesses who ignore the legislation.
How do I ensure I am compliant?
By checking the TPS database, you can do this in a couple of ways
- Subscribe to the database (https://corporate.tpsonline.org.uk/), then check it before calling potential customers
- Use a system that checks numbers for you, for example typing “TPS checker” into google search will bring up a list of providers
- Use a phone system that does the checking for you real time, which is where our business phone system comes in
The easy solution
OBN’s business phone system has TPS checking built in. When calling a potential customer the phone system will ask you to confirm you want to proceed if that number is registered on the TPS database. This is a very fast and reliable method of ensuring your compliance with the legislation.
